    1. Ludwig Bemelmans was an Austrian author, an internationally known gourmand, and a writer and illustrator of children s books He is most noted today for his Madeline books, six of which were published from 1939 1961 A seventh was discovered after his death and published posthumously in 1999.

    2. Bemelmans combines family history his mother s with current events to create this sad charmer of a story set in Regensburg, Germany, during WWII.Color reproductions of his paintings give even dimension to the story Thoroughly enjoyable.

    3. As I read this book, I realized that I ve read many books set in the British Isles, some set in France, but very few in Germany, and those are generally harsh views of Nazi leadership This story has a strong sense of time and place, which depicts common people adjusting their lives to survive the war years Bemelmans pictures add an important dimension to the story I had a chance to buy of his books at a local thrift store Why didn t I buy them all A lost opportunity.

    4. Having just returned from a Danube River cruise I picked from shelf and found it to bring back much of what was part of the excursions in the area visited I look forward to of this author Have collected several of his works through my favorite vintage shop I think this book us best read in one sitting.
