    1. Jennie Coughlin first won awards for her coverage of small towns in Massachusetts while working at community newspapers there, and now uses a different kind of storytelling to showcase life in fictional Exeter, Massachusetts In addition to her work as a reporter, editor and columnist at small newspapers, she was Virginia s USA TODAY correspondent for a few years The flavor of small college towns with lots of history and strong arts communities comes through in her stories about Exeter, a small mill town in the Blackstone Valley The name is a nod to her hometown s history, but Exeter isn t based on Franklin or any of the other small towns she s lived in reality in those places is far too unbelievable to make good fiction.

    2. I really wanted to like this a lot better than I did The problem for me was that I found the 3 guys irritating and just wanted to smack them around the head with my Kindle or something harder I found the writing fine, and just a couple of errors and some wonky formatting I am interested enough in the story to look forward to the next one, especially with the rather abrupt ending that took me by surprise I did particularly like how Liz wasn t immediately forgiving Handled realistically than many [...]

    3. Last year I read a collection of short stories called Thrown Out Stories from Exeter by Jennie Coughlin My favorite was the story of two young boys who found dead bodies in a marsh outside of town and All That is Necessary takes us back to Exeter twenty years later with some of the same characters This isn t your typical story, there are relationships but romance isn t the focus instead we revisit the past when it collides with the present and the effects it has on our main characters I easily c [...]

    4. First, I would like to point out that there are supposed to be Exeter stories coming, so don t let the ending throw you That being said, this is a wonderful story set in the small, fictional town of Exeter, Massachusetts The characters are realistic, with strengths and weaknesses, virtues and flaws The story centers around an event in the past that comes back to haunt everyone when a long absent denizen returns to Exeter 13 year old Rick left, unwillingly, when his father was arrested and convi [...]

    5. 20 years ago, the small Boston town of Exeter was rocked when it was learned the Boston mob was using the swamp to dump bodies Now, Rick, the son of one of the men convicted as a result, is moving back to town And his old friends don t know what to make of it I could not put this book down, literally reading most of it in one day While not a mystery, the tension is still very real, and the characters are so great you want to root for them NOTE Jennie is a friend who sent me the book for free I h [...]

    6. Engaging characters, a multi layered and intelligent plot, how the past can bias your present, and the Irish Mob thrown in for good measure this first novel in a series is a good book to make you think If fluff is all you read, ignore this book Upon reading it, you ll be frustrated at the end but only because you know you have to wait for the next installment.Disclaimer I m a member of the author s critique group and saw this work through its various iterations, but I also think that makes me un [...]
